Two major French chains are relaunching a scheme to sell fuel at cost-price this weekend.
Over 700 stations managed by E.Leclerc will sell fuel at cost price – i.e. the price they purchase it at from suppliers – to drivers today and Saturday (August 1 and 2).
807 ‘U’ service stations will also sell fuel at cost price across the same period.
Although such action does not generate profit for the companies, it may attract customers into the accompanying stores / restaurants, bringing in revenue from sales there.
Not all Leclerc stations are participating, including those serving motorway traffic, and certain fuels are not included in the deal. Details can be found on the Leclerc website.
“This weekend as many July drivers will be returning home, August residents will be taking to the road for their vacation. There will be traffic. That is why I am announcing the renewal of our cost-price operation as a gesture for everyone leaving and returning home,” said head of the chain Michel-Édouard Leclerc.
Fuel prices have been steady in recent months after rising sharply in the preceding years due in part to the war in Ukraine and the Covid-19 crisis.
An increase in fuel costs this summer following the period of conflict between Iran and Israel led to threats that prices may reach levels seen in 2022 - 2023, however they have remained stable to date.
You can track the price of petrol using the official government fuel website.
