Who has to register with the EU’s new Entry/Exit System?

The digital system replaces passport stamping with automated electronic checks at Schengen borders

The system records travellers' entry and exit along with biometric data such as fingerprints and facial images.

Millions of non-EU travellers, including frequent visitors to France, now fall under the EU’s new Entry/Exit System (EES), which came into force on October 12, 2025.

The system records each traveller’s entry and exit, along with biometric data such as fingerprints and facial images. It is being phased in over a six-month period, meaning not all border points are yet using it in full.

When fully operational the scheme will replace passport stamping with automated electronic checks at Schengen borders.
