Short seasonal contracts

Would-be employers must obtain official authorisation to employ non-residents

Is it possible to do short-term seasonal work in France in the period of 90/180 days without obtaining a visa?

If you are a non-resident with a nationality benefiting from a visa waiver for periods of up to 90/180 days in the Schengen area, then yes, technically it is possible to come and do a short period of seasonal work without a visa or residency card.

However, apart from in a few designated sectors, your would-be employer must obtain official authorisation to employ you, which – with the exception of certain work areas facing shortages (currently including agriculture) – means they must first advertise the job for three weeks via the French job centres network.

They must also apply for authorisation, explaining why you are qualified, with supporting documents, such as relevant diplomas.

If any offers are received during this this process the employer must justify refusing them, for example showing that you are the only person with the right qualifications for the job.

Once they receive the authorisation, they would forward it to you.

As a result, it is rare for French employers to go through the process for people who will be working for them for less than three months.

Nonetheless, a French temporary work contract can be issued for as little as one month.

Sectors allowing work without authorisation include sporting and cultural activities, and taking part in trade fairs and conferences.
