Casino stores cease music

No more instore tunes for shoppers as supermarket cuts costs

THE AISLES of Casino supermarkets have fallen silent, victims of financial cut backs.

The measure will save the group money, as it no longer has to pay rights to the Sacem, Société des auteurs, compositeurs et éditeurs de musique
(which deals with copyright and payments for music).

A spokesman for the group said: “In any case, the songs were always interrupted by announcements.”

It covers 450 supermarkets, but not Franprix or Leader Price which are also owned by the group.

It is not known how much the group will save. Sacem receives six million
euros a year from all supermarkets combined according to magazine Le Progres.

The measure is still seen as temporary and the music should begin again in 2014.
