FRANCE is the sixth most expensive country in Europe for mobile telephone calls.
The assessment was made by the European Commission which announced yesterday that it wished to see a single telecommunications market across the EU.
“For identical mobile services, users must pay a highly variable price from one country to another,” said a statement by the Commission. It said the widest gap, between Lithuania and the Netherlands was a 774% difference in price.
The average cost of a mobile call in the EU is 9.1 centimes. The UK average is 9.7c, while France is 12.7c.
However, the French market has become cheaper since the introduction of Free as a fourth operator in 2012. These results have yet to be taken into account in the Commission’s statistics.
