Metro to get 4G internet access

170 stations in Paris to have full 3G and 4G coverage from spring with full service across the network by end of 2015

METRO users in Paris will be able to get 3G internet coverage at 170 main RATP stations from next spring – with full 3G and 4G coverage across the entire network by the end of 2015.

Line 1 and RER A and B will be the first to get the new service, and mobile phone operators SFR and Bouygues have already signed up to use the new network. Up to three-quarter of a million passengers will benefit from this first phase of work.

News website PCinpact.com said that the other two main operators, Orange and Free Mobile, have not yet signed an agreement with RATP to use the new networks.

Phone network installation company Sogretel is to install its equipment in the 300 Metro stations and 65 RER stations. A team of around 40 will work on the project, working mainly at night.

SFR has had a 3G network in operation on the busy Gare de Lyon and Châtelet-les-Halles sector since 2012 and there is free wifi available in 48 Metro, RER and bus stations.
