SNCF strike in Lille

Transport trade union CGT is staging a train strike on the SNCF regional rail network in Lille, this weekend.

Transport trade union CGT is staging a train strike on the SNCF regional rail network in Lille, this weekend.

There will be delays and disruptions on trains this Saturday and Sunday in Lille.

The union opposes the partial closure of a freight centre in Somain, and what they see as a lack of staff on the regional network.

The strike could mean disruptions for holidaymakers on their way home and cause delays for visitors to the town's famous "Braderie" (street sale) which is scheduled for this weekend.

Of the expected two million visitors, it is estimated that about 17.5% use the train network to attend the event.

Due to the strike, the SNCF predict that only three out of four trains will be running, both Saturday and Sunday.

CGT representative Jacques Goolen advises people to try to find alternative means of transport and to check the schedule for their return before setting off.

The strike will not affect any other trains and TGV, Corail, Eurostar and Thalys will be running on time.

Passengers can check the regional SNCF website www.ter-sncf.com before travelling.
