Fuel prices have seen a slight reprieve in the past week but remain higher than in the summer. We look at the prices for petrol and diesel in 12 European countries to see just how expensive fuel is in France.
The French government has been keen to protect motorists from the rising cost of petrol and diesel, introducing measures such as permitting companies to sell at a loss from December and offering a new €100 grant of fuel aid.

TotalEnergies also announced that it would cap its prices at €1.99 per litre until 2024.
The government’s measures have met with a lukewarm reception with supermarkets ruling out selling at a loss and French labour union CFDT calling the government’s solutions ”a stop-gap measure”.
How do French fuel prices compare with those in its European neighbours?

Fuel costs in France are higher than the European average, largely due to tax. Indeed, the cost of the fuel itself only comprises 39% of the price paid at the pump, with an added 11.5% going to distribution costs. The rest of the money goes into the state’s coffers.
