Where are French farmers' roadblocks now and what about the weekend?

Two major motorways between Lyon to Spain are shut for 400km as unions call for a ‘blockade of Paris’

Farmers are blocking access to some cities, including Bordeaux, Montpellier and Paris
Published Last updated

French farmers continue to block roads and motorways, with two shut for up to 400km between Lyon and Spain as unions call for a “blockade of Paris” to ensure that their demands are met.

We look at where the strikes are on January 26, and where they are expected on January 27.

Farmers are using parked tractors and bales of straw to create roadblocks on motorways around the country, while in other places they are deliberately slowing traffic with rolling barricades.

The A7 and A9 in the south of France are shut for almost 400km, severely disrupting travel between Lyon and Spain.

They are also disrupting access to some cities, including Bordeaux, Montpellier and Paris as they converge on prefectures in protest.

Travellers should anticipate severe delays on the motorways, even if farmers’ protests are not announced for the area, as the situation is developing rapidly.

The port of Calais warned people to expect delays on the roads accessing the port, however so far no ferry companies have announced significant disruption.

Where will the farmers be on January 27?

Prime Minister Gabriel Attal is expected to meet with the protesters in Occitanie on the afternoon of January 26.

While it is possible that Mr Attal may succeed in disarming the protest, it seems highly unlikely that this will happen overnight.

Rather, they seem likely to continue and even intensify.

The FNSEA and Jeune Agriculteurs farmers unions have announced a “blockade of Paris” from January 26 and 27. Many farmers are likely to join this on Saturday.

Protestors are thought very likely continue the major roadblocks on:

  • A64 at Carbonne (Haute-Garonne)
  • A9 between Between Sigean (Aude) and Orange (Vaucluse)
  • A61 between Carcassonne-Ouest and Lézignan (Aude)
  • A54 between Saint-Martin-de-Crau and Grans (Bouches-du-Rhône)

The unions have announced that they will commemorate the mother and daughter who died in a car accident at a roadblock on Tuesday (January 23).

A march in their memory has been organised in Pamiers (Ariège).
