Rugby hot-shots try golf pot-shots

Rugby and golf have combined in a new sport, created in Souillac earlier this year, leading to the world’s first Rugby-golf tournament in July which saw players try to kick or pass a rugby ball into a bin in the lowest number of shots.

The brainchild of friends Jean-Claude Tardieu, Jérémy Wanin and Mathieu Rollin of the Lot rugby committee, it comes from the common practice of kicking balls into storage bins.

The idea took off and a rugby golf association has started in Montauban in Tarn-et-Garonne, with more set to follow and there is even a group in south-west England.

Golf clubs have a dress code and rugby golf players wear rugby shorts, long socks, no-stud sports shoes, a polo top and a flat cap. Mr Wanin said: “We want every player to be a little bit chic and it smartens up your average rugby man”.
