Yves Gratas: from dental prosthetist to maker of fine jewellery

AFTER honing his hand-eye co-ordination, first under a dental prosthetist and then a Lyon jeweller, Yves Gratas set up his own business in Paris. Now his boutique-workshop on trendy rue Oberkampf is the place to go for unfussy necklaces, bracelets and rings in gold, silver and precious stone.

Among his trademarks are upturning large stones to show the imperfect side – a novel way of creating unique pieces – and he always draws upon the lines and shapes of antiquity.

Yves travels a lot, in South America, Asia and especially India and Thailand, where he buys stones, to mount on his own jewellery. The 19 carat ring Bague pierre de lune, above, costs €1,300.
