Who is woman in Paris 2024 Olympics logo?

The Paris 2024 Olympics logo is clever as a flame and a woman’s face – but who is it supposed to be? G.S.

The organisers of the Paris 2024 Olympics say the feminine traits of the logo are a homage to Marianne, the symbol of the French Republic despite the “woman” not resembling the usual depictions of Marianne with long hair and Phrygian cap.

They say the logo also makes reference to medals by its use of the colour gold, as well as showing a stylised Olympic torch flame in the white area of the face.

The woman’s face is also a reference to the fact that women competed in the Olympics for the first time in 1900 in Paris.

More relevant, probably, is that the typeface used and the short bobbed hairstyle are both reminiscent of the 1920s and the art déco of the period – a subtle nod to the fact that the Olympics were last held in Paris in 1924.
