Carrefour France trials a ‘vegan butcher’ product range
The meat substitutes – including mince and burgers – will be provided by popular brand the Vegetarian Butcher
The supermarket chain Carrefour is to begin selling a ‘vegan butcher’ range of plant-based products that are designed to imitate the cuts of meat normally found at a traditional butcher’s shop.
Carrefour will be putting its vegan substitute meat offering, which it claims to be a first in France, on sale at its in-store butcher counters.
The products on offer will be from the Vegetarian Butcher brand, which was founded in 2010 and bought by Unilever in 2018.
Its plant-based foods are particularly popular in Belgium and the Netherlands.
Carrefour will begin by offering four meat substitute products: soy-based mince at €13.90 per kilo, and soy-based ‘chicken’ breaded nuggets, chicken-style chunks and veggie burger patties at €12.90 per kilo.
If the products prove popular, Carrefour says it may expand the range.
