Photo of the month: May...Les Monts de L'Esterel
Every month we will be sharing a photograph of a place in France. This month we take a look at "Les Monts de L'Esterel", a Mediterranean coastal mountain range.
The Iles de Lérins are a collection of two main and two micro-islands in the Mediterranean Sea, just off Cannes.
The largest of the islands, Sainte-Marguerite, is 3km long and located just 15 minutes away from the Riviera mainland by boat. Trails leading through a forest of Allepo pine and eucalyptus trees allow visitors to explore the flora and fauna of the island.
As bikes and scooters are forbidden, it is ideal for those seeking peace and quiet in a botanical setting. Just a short walk away from the port lies Fort Royal, a place said to be the former residence of the Man in the Mask, who was held captive on the island.
The smaller island of Ile Saint-Honorat is close by and offers an insight into 16 centuries of history. It is home to the Abbaye de Lérins, a Cistercian monastery with an active community of 30 monks who produce wine and offer spiritual retreats.
