The position of French prime minister at the head of government is traditionally relatively stable despite the country’s recent political upheaval.

Since the founding of the French Fifth Republic in 1960, 26 people have served in the role, with most lasting for several years. Two of them would later become president.

However, President Macron’s time in office has already seen six prime ministers.

The latest is François Bayrou, who moved into the Hôtel de Matignon - the traditional residence of French prime ministers - on Friday, December 13, becoming the fourth head of government in a year.
