€100,000 house of the future

A FUTURISTIC-looking house that produces its own energy and costs just €100,000 will go on show at a top Paris design show this month, with the first one due to be constructed near Nice next year.

Architect Stéphane Mathieu has designed the house, called the Ork, to make it as energy efficient as possible. The roof is full of photovolatic panels and the large glass façade traps heat and light.

The curve of the roof allows a maximum amount of rainwater to be collected and stored in a 10,000-litre tank for heating.

Mr Mathieu says the 90m² house can be installed on any terrain and the components screwed together in about six weeks. It is 6.5 metres tall, with four or five main rooms split over three levels.

He has received a lot of interest from construction firms and is hoping to build a prototype in Valderoure in the Alpes-Maritimes next year.

A model will be on display at the Salon L’Observeur du Design at La Villette from November 8.
