Carrefour customers in France can now use AI to do their shopping

French supermarket giant Carrefour has launched a new tool allowing customers to prepare their grocery shopping using ChatGPT, marking a first for a major food retailer in Europe.

The feature, available since March 26, lets users build a shopping basket, search for products, and suggest meal plans through a vocal or written interface. 

It is integrated into ChatGPT’s mobile app, alongside services such as Booking.com and French marketplace Leboncoin. 

Users can access the service by searching for Carrefour in the list of applications on ChatGPT’s home page.

Customers can also ask the chatbot for recipe suggestions, check whether items are in stock, and select delivery options. 

The system suggests alternatives if an item is unavailable, provides portion guidance for recipes, and explains delivery options. Orders must still be finalised on Carrefour’s website, which requires an account.

Payment directly via ChatGPT is not currently available.

Carrefour’s AI plans

“By launching on ChatGPT, Carrefour reaffirms its position as a pioneer in artificial intelligence, which sits at the heart of our strategic plan. We offer ChatGPT users a new way to shop and a simple, seamless purchase journey,” said Carrefour Executive Director Emmanuel Grenier in a press release.

The move targets the estimated 26 million ChatGPT users in France and is part of Carrefour’s strategy to expand its market share in a sector where it currently holds around 22%, according to market analytics company Kantar, with a target of 25% by 2030. 

AI has become central to this strategy: Carrefour launched the Hopla chatbot on its e-commerce site in 2023, replaced by Hopla+ in 2025, and is also working with Google to allow shopping via the Gemini AI assistant.
