Eight months in prison for Bové

Environmental campaigner and former presidential candidate jailed for destroying GM crops.

Environmental campaigner and former presidential candidate José Bové has been jailed for eight months for destroying GM crops.

The offences related to an incident which took place in 2006 in the Gironde.

Bové was among 50 protestors who destroyed a silo holding GM maise.

During the incident the court heard farmer Marc Giblet fired shots to scare off protestors before getting into his 4x4 and smashing into vehicles belonging to them.

The former anti-capitalist presidential candidate was given eight months for his role and banned from standing or voting in elections for four years, while Giblet was given ten.
