Extra security on US-bound flights
Passengers warned to keep mobile phones and laptops charged or lose them at security for US-bound flights
ANYONE heading to America may be asked to switch on mobile phones and other electronic devices they are carrying to prove that they are safe.
“During the security examination, officers may also ask that owners power up some devices, including cell phones,” the US Transportation Security Administration (TSA) said on its website.
“Powerless devices will not be permitted onboard the aircraft. The traveller may also undergo additional screening,” it added.
US officials are concerned that a mobile phones, tablets, laptops or other electronic devices could be used as a bomb.
They singled out smartphones including Apple iPhones and Samsung Galaxy phones for extra security checks on US-bound direct flights from certain unnamed airports Europe, the Middle East and Africa.
France, Britain, Germany and Belgium have all said they would comply with the enhanced security measures on flights to the US.
The TSA also called for closer checks on passengers’ shoes.
