Among other aspects speakers will be considering what travel and immigration arrangements may be in place between the countries in the era of what the UK hopes will be a ‘smooth and orderly’ departure followed by a new ‘deep and special’ relationship.

They will also look at how cooperation between the countries at Calais may hold up in the light of the UK’s split from the EU.

One key area will be the Le Touquet agreement signed between President Jacques Chirac and Prime Minister Tony Blair in 2003 which effectively moved the UK-French border from Kent to Calais.

ULIP dates back to the 19th century, when it was founded as the Franco-British Guild by Edith Williams, who had studied at the Sorbonne and became only the second-ever woman to receive an agrégation (advanced teaching qualification) in English.

It was incorporated into the University of London in 1969 and describes itself as ‘the UK’s leading institute in France’, offering courses in subjects such as French, international relations and law.
