Flights cancelled due to air strike
Flight cancellations expected as pilot unions ask members to walk out in protest over planned changes in law
PILOTS, air hostesses and stewards are all being asked by unions to strike for four days, from today.
They gave notice of possible strikes until Thursday, though they could be extended beyond that.
Air France, at present the only company affected, says more than 85% of its long-haul flights and 80% of medium-haul flights will run as normal. However, passengers are advised to check the company’s website at Air France at least 24 hours before travelling in case of last-minute changes.
The firm says it also gives last-minute updates on cancelled or late flights by text or email, as long as you provided suitable contacts on booking.
Most destinations will still be served, though possibly with fewer flights than usual.
The strikers disagree with a bill going through parliament which would oblige them to declare two days before a planned strike whether or not they will be taking part in it. The law also requires a prediction of what flights will be running to be provided for passengers 24 hours before the start of the strike.
The unions think these requirements will mean employers may put extra pressure on employees choosing to strike, and that the impact of strikes will be lessened.
Similar requirements have been in place for trains since 2008.
