Foire aux vins 2026: France’s supermarket wine sales begin this month

France’s annual autumn wine promotion, known as the foire aux vins, is set to launch this month in supermarkets, hypermarkets, wine cellars and online.

These wine sales are organised to help wine retailers and wholesalers free up their storage for new bottles. For customers, it is the chance to stock up, with even bottles of Bordeaux, Côtes-du-Rhône, Bourgogne and Champagne on offer at low prices.

In 2024, France consumed the second largest amount of wine (23.7 million hectolitres) of any country in the world after the US, according to an infographic published by France’s official agriculture and seafood body FranceAgriMer in 2026. 

In terms of colour, red wine is the most popular (43%), followed by rosé wine (37%), and then white wine (20%). 

The agricultural office also highlighted that people in France purchase the majority of the wine they consume at home (90%) from supermarkets, including discount stores and online retailers.

Each retailer sets their own dates for the foire aux vins, with some sales beginning in August and continuing into October.

A challenging year for wine producers

Winemakers have faced a series of challenges this year with the multiple heatwaves across France meaning that harvesting grapes to make wine started historically early.

Some Bordeaux producers and those based in Var feared their wines might have a smoky taste from the huge forest fires earlier this summer - as was the case for some Californian vineyards where whole vintages were spoiled by a heavy smoke taste after wildfires in 2020.
