French ski resort Val Thorens postpones opening due to lack of snow
The resort has said that there is enough snow at higher elevations but not lower down, and so will wait a week before opening
French ski resort Val Thorens (Savoie, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes) is to delay its opening by a week due to insufficient snow cover.
The resort was initially set to open on November 19, but will now wait until November 26, France Bleu Pays de Savoie reports.
“The particularly anticyclonic weather of this autumn has prevented us from opening the resort and its skiable area to the standard we would hope to offer,” Val Thorens has said.
It added that: “there is a satisfactory snow cover at higher altitudes but it is not possible to sky at the base of the resort.”
Val Thorens is situated at an altitude of 2,300m, and its opening normally kicks off the French ski season.
Anyone who had already bought lift passes or booked hotels for November 19 onwards will be offered a refund. Customers are invited to contact their hotel or Val Thorens Réservation to arrange this.
Tignes and Val d’Isère will also be welcoming their first skiers on November 26.
