French want UK to stay in EU

Poll finds 58% of people are keen for Britain to remain an active member of the union

THE majority of French people are in favour of Britain remaining an active member of the European Union, a new poll has revealed.

The Ifop study for the Journal du Dimanche found 58% in support - rising to 75% among people aged under 35.

David Cameron promised last week to call an "in-out" referendum for voters on the European Union if the Conservative party wins the next UK general election in 2015.

France replied with a promise to "roll out the red carpet" for companies who would leave the UK to keep their major European markets.
