A cool start to the week will be swept away as a new heatwave - the third of 2025 - is set to hit France.
Temperatures will rise by around 10C across most of France between Monday (July 7) and Friday (July 11), and early forecasts suggest that the heatwave will last into next week.
Monday July 7
The start of the week is set to be largely wet and cool.
Storms will hit the east of France, between the Belgian border and the Alps, potentially pushing into the centre of the country, and rain is expected across the north from Nantes to Lille.
Persistent drizzle will also hit the south-west, particularly in the Pyrénées.
The storms are not expected to be severe, but are likely to bring continual rainfall across the affected areas. Small patches of snow are possible at altitudes of 2,300m and higher in the Alps.
In turn, temperatures will be significantly lower than in recent weeks, failing to reach 20C in much of the north and falling to as low as 15C in Strasbourg.
Highs of around 22C in the south-west and 25C along the Mediterranean are also the lowest felt in several weeks, but the risk of forest fires is higher in the south due to powerful winds that may reach up to 90 km/h.
Temperatures will remain high along the Riviera – between 32C and 35C in Nice, and 30C in Corsica – as day-time heat remains strong.
Overnight temperatures are considerably cooler than last week, however, leading to the end of heightened heatwave warnings in the south-east.
Tuesday July 8
Cool overnight temperatures, in parts of the north in single figures, will contribute to a fresh morning, with rain persisting in the east.
However, the west of France will see sunny skies, a sign of the incoming anticyclone winds that will bring the new heatwave.
Temperatures are set to be at their coolest on Tuesday.
The national average temperature is forecast to be 17.6C, around 3C lower than average for the season, in part due to the chilly morning temperatures and rainfall in the east.
It must be noted however these temperatures are taken in the shade, and in the sunny west, being in direct sunlight will make it feel significantly warmer than the given temperature for the area.
Wednesday July 9
Another cool start to the morning will quickly be replaced by clear skies across the entire country, save for wispy clouds in the east.
A mild day, highs of 20C to 25C in the north and 25C to 30C in the east.
However, Wednesday heralds the full arrival of the anticyclone winds, meaning warmer temperatures – particularly at night – will be on their way.
Thursday July 10
Conditions will remain similar – sunny skies everywhere – and no rain is forecast, however temperatures will increase considerably.
Remaining between 22C and 25C in the east, the north and north-west will see highs of 25C to 30C.
In the south-west, temperatures above 30C will be common, and highs of 35C are possible.
Conditions will be similar along the Mediterranean, which will see highs of 30C or more.
Night-time temperatures will start to increase, a key factor for heatwave warnings to be raised.
Friday July 11
Temperatures will rise further, particularly in the west, where highs of 32C in Brittany are possible, and 35C will be the standard temperature in the south-west.
Lyon and Paris will see temperatures of 30C or more.
It is unlikely that heatwave warnings will be put in place before the weekend, as warnings require both day- and night-time temperatures to be above local averages for three consecutive days.
However, this means that from Saturday onwards warnings will likely be put in place, and early forecasts see the heatwave continuing for much of the following week.
In turn, it is possible that heightened alerts will be in place for several days.
