Glass found in Blédina baby food

Producer says it is carrying out a full investigation but there was 'insufficient evidence' to recall more products

FRENCH food producer Danone has ruled out a recall of its baby food products, following the discovery of a piece of glass in a pot of fruit purée.

The group's baby food subsidiary, Blédina, said it was investigating the incident but there was "insufficient evidence" to withdraw products on a larger scale.

Jean-Jacques Levet, who lives in Codognan in the Gard, was feeding his 19-month-old grandson when he noticed a 1cm-wide piece of glass mixed in with the compote de fruits on the spoon.

He alerted doctors who carried out checks, which found no signs that the baby had eaten anything dangerous.

The product had been bought from an Intermarché supermarket in Lunel. The group said it had withdrawn the affected batch from sale and had referred the case to its distributors.

Mr Levet has filed a complaint with the local gendarmerie and sent the product back to the manufacturer.

Blédina has launched an inquiry into what happened. It said it was an "exceptional" case that was being taken "very seriously".
