Kidnap alert at Marseille hospital
An woman seen ‘behaving suspiciously’ in the maternity ward is the main suspect after a newborn disappeared
LATEST: The presumed kidnapper has now reportedly been found, along with the baby, who is set to be reunited with his mother. The woman, who is being questioned, is said to have admitted taking him.
A HOSPITAL in Marseille has raised the alert after a baby went missing.
The search is on for a kidnapper after the newborn disappeared between 22.00 and midnight yesterday from the maternity ward of the Saint-Joseph hospital, one of the largest in the area.
A woman “who no one knew” was seen in the maternity ward last night and is suspected of being responsible. She was “behaving suspiciously” according to public prosecutor Jacques Dallest.
Police are studying CCTV footage to see if it is possible to clearly see her face.
She was aged 25-30, of average height and of Mediterranean or north African appearance, with medium-long dark brown hair, with a blemish on her right cheek.
The baby – a boy called Zacharia – was born on Friday at 15.30, and is thought to have been taken in a pink blanket from the maternity ward.
He was on the fourth floor, with his mother, who was asleep at the time he is thought to have been abducted.
A midwife who came into the room at about midnight noticed his cot was empty.
The police have been talking to the parents, who are Algerian, and gathering other witness statements at the hospital, which is in the city centre of Marseille.
