McDonald's inquiry into man's death

Fast food chain says it is co-operating with police investigation after man died within days of eating at restaurant

MCDONALD'S has launched an investigation after a man died within days of eating at one of the group's restaurants in Marseille.

The fast food giant said it had begun an internal inquiry "as a precautionary measure" and was co-operating with police - but said there was no clear evidence that it was responsible.

The 20-year-old man is reported to have eaten at a McDonald's in the city and then spent several days ill at home, with diarrhoea and vomiting, before dying.

Post-mortem results are expected later today. Marseille public prosecutor Jacques Dallest said: "There is no confirmed link, but it merits further investigation."

McDonald's main rival in France, Quick, saw its sales slide earlier this year when a 14-year-old boy died from food poisoning after eating at one of its restaurants in Avignon.

The franchisee who ran the Quick restaurant is facing charges of manslaughter.

Supermarket chain Lidl recalled a batch of frozen burgers last week after six children were hospitalised with food poisoning.
