Paris gets ready to brew it's own beer

Some 4,000m2 of barley and 20 hop plants of a variety from Alsace, have already been planted out in the Allée Royale, the mairie says.

The first batch of beer will be made with the barley harvest in July and the first hops, which should be ready in September.

Malting and brewing will be done in facilities at the Parc de Bercy, with 10,000 litres expected from the first batch. The mairie says this is part of plans to promote ‘urban agriculture’ and the use of locally-produced products.

In another recent initiative, Parisculteurs, it awarded a contract to Topager which will be growing hop plants at the Françoise Sagan library in Paris 10th and at the Bastille Opera.

The city will shortly launch a new invitation to tender to create hop-growers on around 20 of the city’s walls.

It comes as artisanal beers made by microbreweries have been taking off in France.
