Spring-like temperatures have seen strawberries, roses and mimosas begin to grow
FLOWERS and fruits are growing in the persistent spring-like temperatures that have marked this December.
In the south of France, mimosa can be seen blooming in the hills, while new shoots are growing on trees and roses and even strawberries have been spotted in greenhouses.
In the Loire-Atlantique farmers are having to destroy 55%-80% of their lamb’s lettuce crop as so much has grown that they are unable to collect it in time.

The excess production in the mild temperatures has still had an effect on prices, which are 20%-30% below normal.
The region is an important producer of salad during the winter, however exports have been hit as the mild temperatures are also allowing it to be grown in other European countries.
A France 2 news report showed strawberries growing in a greenhouse in the Loiret, and new shoots growing on the roots of plants as well as from stems.
