Pro-Europe MP shot and stabbed
UPDATE: Jo Cox later died in hospital
A Pro-Europe Labour MP has been shot and stabbed in the street in the north of England by a man who witnesses reportedly say shouted ‘Britain first’ during the attack.
Both Leave and Remain campaigns are reported to have been suspended in the aftermath of the incident, which happened at Birstall, West Yorkshire, and is said to have left Jo Cox, 41, in a critical state.
Eyewitnesses have reportedly spoken of seeing a man in a white baseball cap shooting Ms Cox, and also attacking her with a knife, leaving the mother-of-two bleeding on the pavement.
She was airlifted to Leeds General Infirmary and a man aged 52 has been arrested.
Prime Minister David Cameron and Labour Leader Jeremy Corbyn have expressed shock and concern over the incident.
Ms Cox had reportedly been attending a political surgery in a library near to the street where the attack occurred.
