Return to UK is our only option

We did do our homework.

RESPONDING to C. Walton (March letters Do research and integrate into French life): Before buying 16 years ago, my wife and I did do our homework.

We read books and magazines on buying and living in France. The complexities of inheritance laws were not covered. Had they been, The Connexion would not be receiving so many enquiries.

Also, to quote C. Walton, would it really be "extremely time-wasting" for a pamphlet on inheritance laws to be made available to foreign buyers in a notaire's reception?

Even if it were in French a buyer could get it translated and ask the relevant questions before the sale was finalised. We have a totally-unforeseen inheritance problem.

We can hardly be blamed, nor are we "whining".

We enjoy our life in France but because French inheritance laws gives authority to children over parents, we will not be able to live out our lives here as expected.

Also, we do not want to leave our other children an inheritance problem that could take years to resolve and be costly for them.

Faced with such a likelihood we have no other alternative but to sell up and return to the UK.
