School holidays and busy traffic: which roads to avoid in France this weekend

The end of spring break for some and the start of it for others will see multiple roads in France face congestion

It is recommended to travel very early in the morning or late in the evening

France is preparing for a busy weekend on the roads, as overlapping school holiday periods are expected to cause heavy traffic, particularly along the Mediterranean corridor and in the Paris region.

The situation is mainly driven by the end of the spring holidays for Zone B students, who return to school on Monday, while Zone C (covering Paris, Toulouse, Montpellier, Versailles and Créteil) still has one more week of break.

On top of that, the start of school holidays in Belgium and the Netherlands is expected to further increase traffic flows, with many second home owners heading towards or through France.

Friday is expected to be the most congested day, according to Bison Futé. Both the Île-de-France region and the Mediterranean are likely to experience difficult traffic conditions (orange level), with heavy pressure in both outbound and return directions.

Friday: heavy traffic on Mediterranean routes and around Paris

From early morning, major motorways serving the Mediterranean coast are expected to be heavily used in both directions. The A7, A8, A9 and A10 will experience sustained congestion throughout the day, with traffic gradually building from morning into the early evening.

In addition, the late afternoon will see further pressure on the A50 and A52, particularly around Marseille and the surrounding coastal areas.

In Île-de-France, outbound traffic will become increasingly difficult from late morning onwards, especially on the A6 and A10, as holiday departures combine with regular commuter flows. Congestion on the ring roads and access routes is also expected to worsen during the afternoon, with conditions remaining busy into the evening.

Bison Futé therefore advises, where possible, leaving or crossing the Paris region before 10:00 or after 22:00.

Return journeys also affected across the south

Traffic will not only be concentrated in the outbound direction. On return routes, significant difficulties are expected throughout the day on major southern motorways, including the A7, A8, A9, A50 and A57, particularly in areas such as the Var, Bouches-du-Rhône and around Orange.

Saturday: pressure shifts towards Île-de-France

On Saturday, congestion will mainly be concentrated in Île-de-France in the morning. The A6 and A10 are expected to be particularly busy from early hours, with traffic intensifying mid-morning and potentially continuing into the afternoon.

The A13 may also see delays, while the A1 between Paris and Lille is expected to be heavily used in the early afternoon. At the same time, the A7 between Valence and Orange could experience significant congestion.

To avoid the worst conditions, it is advised to travel either very early (before 07:00) or later in the afternoon (after 17:00).

Sunday: return to smoother conditions

By Sunday, traffic conditions are expected to return to normal across most of the country, with Bison Futé forecasting green (normal flow) conditions on major routes.
