Shark kills French man on honeymoon
Wife was on beach as husband was attacked by shark on Reunion island
A FRENCH man on honeymoon on Reunion island has been killed in a shark attack.
36-year-old Stéphane Berhamel had been surfing near the popular beach of Brisants de Saint-Gilles when the shark bit him in the arm and thigh. Rescuers were unable to resuscitate him.
His wife was on the beach when the attack happened and is being treated for shock. Local reports suggest Berhamel had ignored advice to stay away from certain areas of the water because of the threat of sharks.
The couple were on honeymoon on the island from Morteau, in the Franche-Comté. They had an 18-month-old child.
It is the third shark attack on the island in recent years.
