Should England be joined to Anjou, referendum asks
Brexit may not be in any sense finalised, but the organisers of the Accroche-Coeurs festival in Angers have decided to take matters into their own hands - by holding a different kind of referendum
Voters online and in Angers will have the chance to vote yes or no to the question, “do you approve of England being reattached to Anjou?”. The idea would be the reunion of the historical region of Anjou with England under the banner of the Angevin Empire, a union that lasted around a hundred years from the mid-twelfth to mid-thirteenth centuries.
It was revealed in May that the theme of this year’s Accroche-Cœurs would be ‘So British!’. The festival takes pace between September 8 and 10, and voters will be able to cast their ballots between these dates.
Accroche-Cœurs master of ceremonies, Calixte de Nigremont, explained in an ‘official declaration’ that there were numerous economic, cultural and diplomatic problems engulfing Britain, and that reverting back to the 800-year-old union could provide a solution.
"Today, with the historical ties that once united England and Anjou, it seems important to us to take the initiative and propose a strong and ambitious project to reunify the Plantagenet empire, which in the twelfth century united half of Europe under Angevin sovereignty,” explained
A Facebook page - Consultation Plantagenêt - supporting the declaration so far has 800 likes.
