Six dead as more floods hit south

Cars swept away by rivers in Lozère and Gard, which had not been placed on orange weather alert

AT least four people have died and one child remains missing in the latest floods to hit the south of France.

The accidents happened in the Lozère and Gard departments - which had not been placed on orange alert by Météo France.

The forecaster had instead issued a warning for just four departments: the Vaucluse, Bouches-du-Rhône, Var and Alpes-Maritimes.

A woman and two children were found dead in the family car in Cruviers-Lascours, near Nîmes (Gard) shortly after midnight on Saturday morning.

The father managed to escape from the car, which had been crossing a bridge when the river levels rose and swept it away.

In the Lozère, a man died on Friday evening when his car was carried away by flood water from a river that had burst its banks.

Another man was found dead in Peyremale, in the Gard, on Saturday night inside his car. He too had been driving over a flooded bridge.

A 60-year-old man died in the Hautes-Alpes in a fall while trying to unblock a drain.

The orange weather alert was lifted on Saturday night.
