UMP pays €30k for pirating MGMT hit

Governing party agrees out of court payout for using track Kids at political meetings without permission.

THE UMP party has agreed to pay €30,000 for using the MGMT hit Kids at political meetings without permission.

According to France Info the amount was agreed after lawyers for the group took the party to court for using the track without permission.

The money will go to a body that fights to protect the moral and copy rights of artists, according to the radio station.

MGMT’s video was played during the nomination of new party leader Xavier Bertrand and repeated again on the internet.

A lawyer for MGMT had already denounced a symbolic offer of €1 compensation by the UMP’s communication agency Blue Advertainment as “disdainful”.

It is the second time this month that the governing party, currently pushing for a new internet anti-piracy law, has been accused of hypocrisy.

Just ten days after banning open bars and the sale of alcohol to minors, the youth branch of the party, UMP Lycées, organised an event with drinks offers which was open to under 16s.
A party spokesman said that the law had been upheld.
