War hero being buried in Normandy
Veteran Charles Hargrove, who died on Friday, will be buried near the D-Day beaches
BRITISH World War Two hero Charles Hargrove who died on Friday, is to be buried in Normandy where he took part in the D-Day landings.
Mr Hargrove, 92, lived in Paris but asked to be buried in Asnelles, alongside Maurice Schumann, the spokesman who announced the liberation of France – a road in the town is also to be named after him, said Ouest France.
Assigned to the 231rd infantry as a translator and liaison officer under General Sir Alexander Stanier, he played an important part in communications between British forces and the local authority and population.
Mr Hargrove was commander of the Légion D’honneur, OBE and honorary citizen of Asnelles.
Despite poor health following a savage attack at his apartment building in Paris last year, he took part in the D-Day celebrations at Asnelles in June where dined with president François Hollande.
He will be buried on Wednesday.
