Warm, calm, and dry: French weekly weather forecast September 21 - 25

France is set for another week of calm and above-average temperatures.

A powerful high-pressure anticyclone system remains above the country and will continue to bring dry weather, furthering France’s drought woes. 

However, despite high temperatures during the day, overnight and morning temperatures will be chilly, more typical of late September, autumnal conditions.

Temperatures can shift by more than 15C between early morning and afternoon peaks this week.

Monday September 21 

The week starts as it means to go on, and will be similar to much of last week – calm, warm, and dry. 

The high pressure anticyclone system is firmly in place in the Atlantic, influencing much of France but particularly the south, south-west, and western coast. 

There will be some cloud coverage north of the Loire, but this should dissipate by early afternoon. Elsewhere, unblemished sunny skies are forecast throughout the day. 

Highs of 21C - 25C in the north are forecast, rising to 30C in the south. 

The western Mediterranean coast may see highs of 33C, alongside ample sunshine. 

Tuesday September 22 

Conditions on Tuesday will be almost identical to the start of the week, although sunshine will be more consistent across the north. 

Temperatures will increase dramatically through the day, from morning temperatures of 8C in the north and 15C in the south, up to 25C in the north and 30C in the south by the afternoon. 

In the south-west, temperatures slightly above 30C are possible, and again could reach 33C along the western Mediterranean. 

Wednesday September 23

Wednesday and Thursday will see the peak of temperatures across the week, although skies in the north will be cloudier than at the start, diminishing the summer-time feeling. 

Clouds will sweep in north of the Loire in the morning and stay put for much of the day, however there is no risk of rainfall. 

Temperatures will again rise by around 15C from the early morning to the afternoon, with highs of 25C - 27C in the north and 31C in the south, rising to 33C in the south-west. 

Thursday September 24 

Conditions will be almost identical to Wednesday, although cloud coverage is expected to move southwards and impact most of the country. 

Unlike the clouds on Wednesday – large and white – these wispier clouds will move rapidly across skies, but not impact total sunshine. 

Temperatures will remain similar, potentially rising by a degree or two. 

Friday September 25 

The high-pressure system will remain in place over much of France, helping to maintain the calm and dry weather, but in the south-east may be pushed out by the potential arrival of  Mediterranean storms. 

These storms could impact Corsica and potentially the south-east. 

However, there is debate over whether these storms will arrive. La Chaîne Météo (owned by Le Figaro) is expecting storms but state forecaster Météo France is forecasting a calm weekend across the region matching the rest of the country.

Updated weather models later in the week will be able to give more precise information.

Temperatures will drop by 1C or 2C, more closely resembling the start of the week than the end, but still above average for the season. 

Early forecasts for the weekend see the anticyclone remain in place, although some showers are possible in coastal areas of Brittany and Normandy.

The system will weaken after this, with some rainfall expected next week.
