Warning over 'tax refund' email scam
Message claims to come from French tax authorities and asks for bank details to refund €180 in overpaid income tax
WEB-USERS have been warned about a fake email doing the rounds promising a €180 rebate on overpaid French income tax.
The message claims to come from the budget ministry and includes a link to the official impots.gouv.fr website.
Written in bad French, it invites the recipient to reply with debit or credit card details to allow the €178.25 overpayment to be refunded “within six days”.
The French tax service says the email is a scam and has reminded people never to give out personal details such as bank card numbers in an email.
“In any case, a bank card is not required to pay tax or for the refund of a tax credit,” it said.
