Two-thirds (66%) of people polled in France have had difficulty finding a tradesperson to do work, according to a recent survey.

The poll, published last year by Travaux, an online platform where users can search for tradespeople, also found that 67% of respondents believe the government could do more to improve the situation.

Finding a handyman can be similarly frustrating, as Connexion readers have noted. Recent requests sent to our inbox include advice on finding help “putting furniture together” and a “simple window repair”.

The following platforms both advertise handyman services.

Note that trades are highly regulated in France, and handymen are restricted to only the most basic of tasks.

These include small DIY jobs that can be completed in under two hours and which do not require professional skills.

Taskrabbit

This handyman service matches local freelancers with people who need help. Founded in the US, it has been available in France since 2019, launching nationwide in 2021.

You can hire so-called ‘taskers’ for many different jobs, from hanging a TV to moving house. The most common requests in France, according to the company, include furniture assembly, minor household repairs and grocery shopping.

The app is straightforward to use. First, choose a task from its list and submit a request. The app will then match you with a tasker. Choose either a same-day appointment or a future time to complete the job.

You can manage the task in the app, chat to the tasker and pay when the job is complete.

Taskers set their own hourly rate, and users can cancel for free with 24-hours’ notice.

Allovoisins

Created in 2013, Allovoisins is a French marketplace that matches customers with service providers near them (hence the name – ‘Helloneighbours’). It has some 4.5 million customers, making it the market leader.

Its most requested services are DIY and small household jobs, but it offers everything from tool loans to childcare.

To start using the app, first set up a profile and then post your request. Allovoisins suggests being as detailed as possible; include information about what you need doing, the date you need it completed by and your budget.

You will start receiving offers from local people willing to help, and can choose the one that suits you best.

After the task is completed, both parties can rate each other. These ratings help when choosing who to hire for a job.

Fees are set by providers and negotiated between them and the customer.

It is important to keep all communication on the platform, both for security reasons and to ensure a traceable record.

Taskrabbit performs identity and background checks on taskers for extra peace of mind.

It is also worth checking that handymen have a SIRET number on the Chambre de Métiers website
