If you receive a speeding ticket in France, you have the right to request the image taken by the speed camera that recorded the offence.
This can be useful if you wish to verify the circumstances of the infringement or challenge the fine. For example, it may help if you were not the driver at the time, if the situation is debatable (such as crossing a red light to allow an emergency vehicle to pass), or if multiple vehicles appear in the image.
It can also be relevant if the image is unclear or does not allow for proper identification of the vehicle or the offence.
However, it is important to note that image requests do not suspend the deadlines for either the reduced payment period or the period allowed to contest the fine.
How to request the image
The procedure is indicated on the reverse side of the fine notice and can be carried out either by post or online and is free of charge. However, in certain cases involving repeated or duplicate requests for the same offence, administrative fees may be applied.
Request by post
You must send a written request including:
The request should be sent to:
Centre automatisé de constatation des infractions routières (CACIR)
CS 41101
35911
Rennes Cedex 9
However, postal processing can take longer, sometimes up to around one month.
Online request
For a faster process, you can submit your request online via the ANTAI website, using the reference number on your notice. You will need to prepare the same documents in digital format (.pdf, .jpg, .jpeg or .png), combined into a single .zip file not exceeding 5 MB:
After accepting the terms and conditions and selecting your status (individual, professional, or organisation), you will need to provide your personal details, including address and contact information.
You will then be asked to enter the speeding ticket reference number (10 digits, or 12 digits for higher-penalty notices).
Before final submission, you will be shown a summary of your request to verify all information. Once submitted, the image is typically sent within 5 to 15 days.
Note that you may contest a fine even without requesting the image. However, accessing the image can help clarify important details and strengthen your case.
Additionally, as images are only stored for a limited period, it is recommended to request them promptly after receiving the fine.
