Four major banks in France are continuing with plans to combine their ATMs, helping to provide rural areas with better services.

By the end of 2026, BNP Paribas, Société Générale, CIC, and Crédit Mutuel will replace their current ATM fleet with 7,000 ‘Cash Services’ machines across the country, including some new installations in rural areas.

These machines will pool the groups’ resources, particularly helping residents in rural areas who face difficulty accessing cashpoints.

It will also eliminate withdrawal fees for bank clients using the Cash Services ATM, where they may have previously been charged for using machines not affiliated with their bank.

For example, instead of having one BNP Paribas and one Crédit Mutuel ATM in the same village, there will be one ‘Cash Services’ ATM.

The measure will “sustainably maintain the self-service banking that the French value, in both urban and rural areas,” the groups said in a statement when the decision was originally announced in 2023.

The group also highlights reduced CO² emissions, as fewer machines mean fewer trips to repair a machine will be required, and overall energy usage is cut.

The banks have invested €122 million into 2SF, the company managing the ATMs on behalf of the banks, to fund initial costs.

The rollout of Cash Services machines was initially set to be complete by the start of 2026, but was delayed.

Use of machines remains the same

Despite cashpoints having a new name ‘Cash Services’ and branding, little will change for users of the machine.

“As soon as you insert your card, your bank's interface appears on the screen,” said president of 2SF Olivier Fournier to Le Parisien, allowing users to interact with the banking interface with which they are familiar.

The machines will accept cheque and cash deposits.

At the start of 2026, a report by the Senate examined issues over rural banking service access in France, particularly for ATMs
