Why was my French GP visit reimbursement so small?

Assurance Maladie has standard refund amounts, but exceptions exist

Reader question: We recently switched our French GP after our old one moved away. I recently made two appointments – an initial consultation and a second appointment. I was refunded €19 by Assurance Maladie for the first appointment but I have only received €4.67 for the second. My top-up insurance has reimbursed me normally for their portion, so what has happened?

We are surprised to hear this, as €4.67 is an unusual amount to be refunded after a visit to your declared médecin traitant.

As of January 2026, Assurance Maladie states the standard state reimbursement for visiting a general practice doctor is €8 (or €4.90 if a sector 2 general doctor is not part of a tariff cap scheme).

For consultations with your declared médecin traitant, however, you should receive a refund of €19 (or €14.10 if they are ‘sector 2’ and not part of the tariff-cap scheme). You state that one of your visits was reimbursed by this amount.

One possibility is that your change of GP was not correctly recorded by Assurance Maladie, and that this will be regularised in due course.

It is worth checking also that the small amount was not a state reimbursement for a different service, such as a prescription.

It is also worth checking whether part of the reimbursement was offset against any outstanding medical deductibles (franchises médicales), which are sometimes deducted automatically from reimbursements.

You can check the history of your refunds through your online space on the Ameli.fr website, through the ‘mes paiements’ section, and the ‘relevé de remboursement’ for each medical visit.

Compare the €19 refund and the €4.67 one to see if the information is the same.

If the refunds are still unclear, you can send a message to Assurance Maladie using the ‘AmeliBot’ chatbot.

Alternatively, you can call the service on 3646, or for an English language representative, 09 74 75 36 46.
