A 65-year-old British woman has been found dead at her home near Trémolat (Dordogne) with multiple deep wounds, in what the state procureur describes as an “exceptionally violent” attack.
The victim has been widely identified in UK and French media reports as Karen Carter, however this has not been been officially confirmed by the local authorities, which is not unusual in France.
Emergency services were called shortly after 22:00 on Tuesday, April 29 by a friend who found her lying injured near her car.
Despite her friend's efforts to administer first aid, and further attempts by emergency responders, Mrs Carter died at the scene.
The 65 year old was a former teacher and mother of four.
Five deep wounds
In a statement, procureur Sylvie Martins-Guedes said the victim had five serious injuries caused by ”a sharp object”.
The wounds were located on the chest, groin, arm and leg, and were described as showing a “clear intention to kill”.
Initial findings suggest Mrs Carter had spent the evening with friends in Trémolat before returning to her home, located in a hamlet outside the village.
Several minutes later, the friend went to her home.
He discovered her injured and called emergency services before attempting resuscitation himself.
France Bleu reports the man claimed to have been in a relationship with Mrs Carter for several weeks, however this has not been confirmed by the procureur.
The man is not in custody. The procureur said “all avenues are being explored.”
Home sealed off for investigation
Police cordoned off the property, which includes Mrs Carter's residence and an adjacent gîte.
Investigators from the Bergerac criminal brigade and the investigations unit in Agen remained at the scene on Tuesday night and into Wednesday morning, interviewing neighbours.
No suspicious noises or events were reported by local residents.
Known in the community
Mrs Carter had lived in Dordogne for several years and was active in the life of the small village of around 600 people.
She was also a member of the local over-50s women’s football team, participating in the ‘Soccer Grannies World Cup’ in South Africa, where she once lived, earlier this year.
Teammates told France Bleu that they were “shocked and heartbroken” by the news, describing her as a generous person who was always ready to help others.
The local cafe that she frequented, announced that it was cancelling its Wednesday concert evening and Thursday quiz 'due to a death'.
