Girl charged over attack on teacher

Assault comes just days after government announced new bid to tackle school violence

A GIRL pupil has been charged with causing grievous bodily harm after attacking a teacher in the classroom.

The 14-year-old has been excluded from school and put on probation under the care of a teacher while awaiting judgment, the prosecution service in Toulon said. Prosecutors had wanted her put under judicial supervision.

Local newspaper Var-Matin said she hit the Collège Henri-Wallon teacher in the face during a French class in La Seyne-sur-Mer (Var) on Tuesday.

Her teacher had asked for her carnet de correspondance school logbook to send a note to her parents as she had been disrupting the class.

The teacher received cuts to the jaw and mouth in the attack and is on sick leave.

Meanwhile, the head of Collège Jean-Rostand in Herbiers (Vendée) has lodged a complaint against a 13-year-old pupil who punched her several times after being excluded from school for bad behaviour.

The boy had left the school after abusing the teacher and then returned to launch the attack - which took several people to break up.

The attacks came just over a week after Education Minister Vincent Peillon announced the setting-up of a permanent body to control school violence.

He was responding to incidents where a mother attacked a teacher in the classroom at Collège Jules-Verne in Buxerolles, near Poitiers, and an 18-year-old student assaulted a teacher in Bordeaux. In another, school staff in Amiens walked out after a pupil sprayed tear gas on a teacher.
