The group Banque Populaire Caisse d’Epargne is cutting the number of cash machines in villages because of the falling number of withdrawals.
Rather than cash, the French are increasingly turning to bank cards which now make up more than half the payments in the country.
Contactless cards have accelerated this trend with 46m payments made in 2016 according to official figures.
