More than 20 cheeses recalled in France due to risk of E.coli

Raclette, Morbier, and goat’s cheese sold in many supermarkets around the country are among products affected

Dozens of cheeses, mostly of the morbier and raclette varieties, have been recalled in France, due to worries over the presence of toxic E.coli bacteria.

The cheeses, produced under multiple brand names, were sold in supermarkets across France.

Most of the cheeses were from Monts et Terroirs brand, although others were from Secret d'affineur, Intermarché own-brand products, and Maison du Gruyère.

One recall was for an EARL Louet goat’s cheese product.

E.Leclerc, Intermarché, Super U and Carrefour were all listed as stockists of the products.

Cheeses under the Monts et Terroirs brand can be taken back to the point of purchase for a refund, up until February 15, 2024. It is likely other cheeses will also be able to be refunded.

Monts et Terroirs have also set up a helpline for customers affected by the recall – 08 00 80 12 87.

Consuming bacteria could lead to severe illness

The RappelConso website states that consuming products with the bacteria “can lead to diarrhoea (which is sometimes bloody), abdominal pain and vomiting” as well as possibly a fever.

These symptoms can become present up to one week after eating contaminated food.

Between 5% and 8% of cases of E.coli food poisoning are followed by kidney complications, which can potentially be severe. Children are more likely to suffer these complications.

If you are experiencing any of the symptoms above and have consumed any of the products that have been recalled, you should immediately contact your doctor.

On the other hand, if none of the symptoms have become present ten days after consumption, there is no need to worry, the website states.
