Trump says yes to Bastille Day visit

US president will join President Macron for Champs-Elysées military parade

President Donald Trump will join President Macron at the Bastille Day parade on the Champs-Elysées, which is this year commemorating the centenary of the US entering the First World War.

Mr Trump accepted Mr Macron’s invitation to attend the event on the Féte Nationale on July 14, where US troops will take part in the military parade alongside French armed forces.

It is a new coup for Mr Macron after welcoming Russian president Vladimir Putin to Versailles.

Relations between the two leaders have not until now been easy, with President Macron directly challenging Mr Trump’s decision to pull out of the Paris climate agreement with an appeal to “Make our planet great again.”

He had also made headlines worldwide when he fiercely resisted Mr Trump’s well-known – and feared – handshake at the Nato summit in Brussels. Mr Macron said it was a “moment of truth”.
