When you want to contact a firm’s customer services, you often find that the first number advertised is a premium rate one – however, cheap or free options are usually available if you can find them.
Non-premium numbers should be found in your contract or correspondence with the firm.
Premium numbers can be recognised by starting figures including 081, 082 and 089, while free numbers start with numbers in the range from 0800 to 0805, and ones in the range 0806 to 0809 are at ordinary landline rates, as are those with the regional prefixes: 01 (Ile-de-France), 02 (north west), 03 (north east), 04 (south east), and 05 (south west).
The 09 numbers indicate a call to an internet-based line at local-call rate. Special four-digit numbers may or may not be at a premium rate.
